Labour begins the process of acquiring some nice barunijiet of its own

You’d have had to have severe sinusitis not to pick up the scent on the wind when the party to celebrate Joseph Muscat’s Labour leadership was held at the Monte Kristo vineyard vaults.

Perhaps it’s time to ask who paid for it.

The Times, Friday, 6 March
Mepa’s no to Balzan development
Labour member votes in favour

The planning authority yesterday turned down a development application by Charles Polidano to construct 40 apartments in the old centre of Balzan. The Mepa board’s decision was in line with the planning directorate’s recommendation not to give the project the go-ahead. All the board members voted against the project with the exception of Roderick Galdes, Labour’s planning spokesman, who is also the party’s nominee on the board.

In one word:

Jaq – not to Charles Polidano, as he is obviously going to do whatever he can to ensure that his business survives and even thrives. But certainly a great big ‘jaq‘ to Labour.

And an even bigger ‘jaq‘ to Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar, who allied themselves to these unscrupulous and unprincipled politicians so as to get what they want.

For Roderick Galdes, Labour’s nominee on the MEPA board and Labour’s spokesman on MEPA issues, a block of 40 apartments in a historic village core is just dandy, but a concealed museum beneath a square in Valletta is not.

Il-vera jaq

Let’s hope Roderick Galdes and his Labour Party are not on the take.

  1. Monica Cilia says:

Shame on Roderick Galdes. It seems that the Labour Party´s main interest is to vote against anything logical. Besides the fact that Balzan is already saturated with newly built apartments replacing beautiful villas and gardens, the proposed development would have been bang in the old village core.

  2. Graham C. says:

    Not surprised

  3. Harold says:

How can Roderick be against ic-Caqnu. Caqnu is building a new village somewhere near the airport with the help of Charles Mangion. Even Charles has his own 40 apartments and underlying garages in Luqa. Wonders never cease.

  4. combinaguai says:

How about suggesting to Mr Caqnu to propose a farm-house-style Lidl megastore instead of the apartments in Balzan? Seeing that in Kirkop a vast ‘green area’ was converted into a parking-lot the size of a village square and a store (with no apparent problems from anyone), I’m more than sure that another Lidl in Balzan would cause no harm… And I’m sure Labour would agree too, because another store would employ more people giving more service to even more people.

  5. H.P. Baxxter says:

    Begins?

  6. Cangun says:

I always respected Roderick Galdes, but now I just want to throw up with disgust.

  7. Harry Purdie says:

Who will suffer ‘The Wrath of Grapes’?

  8. Antoine Vella says:

Roderick Galdes is less cunning than the PL representative who preceded him: Joe ‘we-struck-oil’ Mizzi. On a day like today Mizzi would have had urgent business elsewhere and not showed up for the Board meeting. He was notorious for dodging tricky situations in this manner.

  9. P says:

Did you hear even a slight whimper or read a comment from the FAA about this Caqnu/Labour business in Balzan? I didn’t. I wonder why.

  10. Moggy says:

Who is Roderick Galdes, anyway? Never heard of him!

[Daphne – Better keep yourself informed then. The Labour Party has a representative on the MEPA board, and right now it’s Roderick Galdes, a Labour MP who is also – get this – the Labour Party’s spokesman for ‘MEPA-related issues’. http://roderickgaldes.com/%5D

  13. Graham C. says:

    Jesmond,

People who say they have ‘no regrets’ are liars who have alcohol and family problems.

  14. H.P. Baxxter says:

I have alcohol problems and also lots of regrets and family problems. What is the point?

[Daphne – I imagine that the reference was to the infamous ‘No regrets’ interview with Alfred Sant, given as part of his campaign to demolish his chances of re-election.]

  15. H.P. Baxxter says:

Ah, I see. I think there are really some people who have no regrets and have a perfect family life, and no alcohol problems. Unfortunately for me. I’m still alive though. Barely.

  16. Gerald says:

After wrecking half of Malta with over-sized building projects, the self serving blues now throw up in disgust at one member voting in the favour of a development in Balzan (which is also pretty much overdeveloped anyway). You have to have cheek! JAQ to you all.

[Daphne – Gerald, don’t you write for The Malta Business Weekly? Well, then – go off and do some investigation, instead of banging your head on this wall.]

  17. Amanda Mallia says:

I see that Gerald has come out of hibernation. As usual, all he sees is red, not reason.

What many people fail to realise is that the houses whose destruction is being proposed would probably generate more income for the developers/owners should they instead be “rehabilitated”. It would also enhance the overall area, as has happened in other such villages – Lija being one such place.

Another thing, Gerlad – has Caqnu now been added to your “good” list, given his tacit acceptance (though not so tacit in this particular case) by Labour?

You’re beginning to sound like a “green”, Gerald, though not in the literal sense of course. May I suggest that you join the ““Lill-poplu tradejtu, Lil Caqnu paxxejtu”-banner bearing lot? You’d feel very much at home amongst them.

  18. Lino Cert says:

@H.P. Baxxter “Unfortunately for me. I’m still alive though. Barely”

Sorry to hear this. Hang in there. Your posts are an inspiration to many and show that you are obviously very intelligent and an inspiration to others. Time heals all wounds and I am sure that eventually you will find your feet again.

  19. NGT says:

@ Gerald – and many of those over-sized projects were Caqnu’s and the MLP couldn’t stop talking about him and the illegal immigrants he hired. So as a ‘journalist’, shouldn’t you ask why this change the LP’s choice of friends?

  20. Antoine Vella says:

    Amanda Mallia

“Another thing, Gerlad – has Caqnu now been added to your “good” list, given his tacit acceptance (though not so tacit in this particular case) by Labour?”

Yes, it’s the climate change. The climate between PL and Ċaqnu has changed: it is now much warmer.

  21. Karen Magri says:

Daphne, you should be ashamed of yourself, why didn’t you criticize the mepa board and the government nominees when two weeks ago they decided on Windsor Terrace (Sliema) four storey project against the local plan.

[Daphne – Because I’m not Astrid Vella and I’m not interested in Windsor Terrace. If I were, I would be living there. And quite frankly, I don’t see why four storeys in Windsor Terrace are a crime and a scandal, given that the surrounding streets are thick with buildings much higher than that. The Sliema seafront is hardly an old village core. “Daphne, you should be ashamed of yourself….” – God, I can’t bear grown women who speak like they’re still at the convent.]

  22. Karen Magri says:

(but a concealed museum beneath a square in Valletta is not) ARE YOU JOKING! still defending the proposed St. John’s Cathedral quarry. JAQQ

[Daphne – No. I’m still defending the rule of law and adhering to the proper democratic processes, having grown up in the days when it was politicians and their lobbyists who decided which projects should and should not go ahead. The project itself is almost irrelevant. Please widen your intellectual horizons. The schoolyard was a LONG time ago. The St John’s cathedral quarry? Do please stop the hysteria, ‘Karen Magri’.]
