Now the racists round on the army

Published: March 3, 2009 at 1:42am

Remember when the Far Right movement on this island hero-worshipped soldiers and put the army on a pedestal? All that strutting around in boots and uniforms really got them going (which reminds me – Joseph Muscat can end the bitching between Michael Farrugia and Anthony Zammit over the shadow health ministry by giving Zammit the army and the police; what a thrill for him).

Anyway, that’s all over. Disappointed with our boys’ failure to shoot people at sea, tow them back to Libya, or let them drown, The People have rounded on the army. The army is now being accused of aiding and abetting illegal immigration.

The army has produced a public relations video of one of its rescue operations, which is being used to reverse effect by the Far Right. It’s been posted on youtube under the heading ‘Landing of criminal illegal immigrants in Malta’, with some revealing commentary by Abelamarco (what is this business of putting your family name before your given name?).

Abelamarco:

A nation’s armed forces’ main role is to protect the country’s borders from invasion. With Dr Lawrence Gonzi responsible for the AFM (Armed Forces Malta), this role has been reversed. The army has been charged with aiding and abetting the invasion of Malta. Thousand of criminals from Africa every year arrive on our shores with the help of the AFM.

Malta has become a dangerous place to live in. Many areas have become no-go for the Maltese. Illegal immigrants attack, rape and rob people at will. More often than not they are not apprehended and if they are, they get away with probation or suspended sentences because they play the race card every time.

Gonzi is a fundamentalist Catholic who believes that these primitive people are his brothers and sisters because that’s what he reads in his bible. He thinks that he will be rewarded in heaven for destroying his country and people. He will be cursed for ever for his treason. At least, islamic suicide bombers do it to destroy their enemies, but a fundamentalist Catholic does it to destroy his own people.

Feel free to comment on this copy of the AFM video because on the official AFM one you are not allowed to have your say. Save your breath calling me racist, nazi, facist pig, bigot etc, it’s water off a duck’s back.

    Congrats to the AFM for finding a wider/safer plank by the time the pregnant woman had to get off…

    Is it just my imagination, or was there a sizable group of North Africans on that boat? If there was, were they handled just like any other asylum seekers? North Africans, and any other economic migrants, should be transferred to a lock-up unit within, or in the vicinity of the airport, and put on the first flight available to their homeland.

    I posted another comment under a different thread but it seems to have been lost. I am concerned about the number of people being treated for HIV, 50% of which are illegal immigrants/refugees. My question is: what is the percentage of the other 50% that their cases are related to these immigrants? [Daphne – I don’t understand what your question is?]

    I think locals should be educated more about risks and diseases as well as the beautiful traditions of these immigrants.

    If the Maltese army were in Iraq, they would have shortened the war by years

  4. Lino Cert says:

    Health and safety seem to have been thrown to the wind on this video. I wonder: if they were disembarking tourists off a cruise-liner, would they have used such a fragile plank and a single rope? I am sure not. Two weights and two measures.

    There you are. When you dismiss arguments with labels, your labels get dismissed as cop-outs. Which is why what we have is not a debate but a mudslinging fest.

    Abelamarco is nothing more than a crazy bastard – non-human, non-Maltese racist.

    It would be interesting to see the comments about illegal immigration.

  10. Corinne Vella says:

    Chrisitan: You’re probably also wondering how many immigrants have been infected by Maltese people. When you find out, let us know.

  11. Marku says:

    Christian, you may wish to consider that the authorities in Malta have no legal basis to immediately deport the aforementioned Tunisians who entered Malta without proof of identity or point of embarkation. Just because someone arrives in Malta and claims (but does not have the documents to prove) that he or she is from Tunisia, the Maltese authorities have no legal basis on which to deport that person to Tunisia until such proof is provided by the Tunisian authorities or the individuals concerned. Contrary to what some of those who leave comments in the Times’ on-line discussion forum might lead you to believe, the authorities must act within the bounds of Maltese and international law and cannot simply deport someone based on gut feelings or hairs on the back of their neck.

  12. Amanda Mallia says:

    Christian – The same news report ( http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20090301/local/50-of-hiv-cases-involve-african-immigrants ) also stated:

    “Dr Barbara drew parallels with the re-emergence of syphilis, another sexually transmitted infection, in the past decade.

    The disease had practically been (sic) eradicated, but promiscuous behaviour by young Maltese who slept around with tourists meant it made a comeback. Syphilis is a very common infection in eastern Europe.”

    That alone speaks volumes.

  13. Christian says:

    Marku, I only got that explanation after I wrote that note. Very true, our authorities have their hands tight. I am still not convinced that economic migrants (at least so they claim) should be placed with asylum seekers.

    Corinne Vella: aT school we all studied Probabilities. The chances are very, very slim of some Maltese infecting an African with HIV. All I am asking is for the ‘locals’ to be more vigilant, in contrast to what one sees in certain clubs in Paceville and other areas.

    Also, a ‘thank you’ goes to the AFM and police forces for doing a great job, treating these people with the dignity they deserve, when resources are limited. Again, may I insist that instead of fighting illegal immigrants, we should start fighting illegal immigration. And, before you ask, YES there is a difference.

  14. Christian says:

    Tourists? Most tourists that I met in Malta, and that’s a lot in some 10 years working in several hotels, are genuine, and because of their culture (ie. British, Mid-Europeans and Scandinavians), they are more aware of the risks taken when sleeping with strangers. Then, the ones that do take the calculated risk, or do it because they were drunk, aren’t afraid of going to their GP and request an STD test. The chances of being infected by a tourist… slim.

    ‘Syphilis is a very common infection in eastern Europe.’ And 1 + 1 = 2.

    Does this outbreak have to do with the influx or craze we had about 8 ago of Eastern European girls? I don’t know what the situation is now, because I lost all contact, but I remember the invasion we had of ‘students’ coming from Eastern Europe, or ex-Soviet Union countries if you like. Dogs on the street knew where to find these girls, but the authorities did very little to break the chain. The only few times that I heard of some kind of raid was, when one of these girls formally complained on departure about the ill-treatment she got from the boss. All-in-all, whether one comes from Europe (not EU), Asia or Africa, one needs a visa. They have to stick to the conditions of the said visa, otherwise should be punished by law.That is why I reiterate: ‘Go after the big dogs’. There are people out there that do know who the ‘big dogs’ are. Why they don’t take action is another question.

    [Daphne – The chances of being infected by a tourist are not slim at all – either a tourist coming here, or a Maltese tourist returning from holiday. Why do you think we now have such a high level of STD infection – or haven’t you been listening to what the head of the state STD clinic has been saying for the last few years? I love the way people prefer to go on ‘hunches’ rather than considering the available facts.]

  15. Corinne Vella says:

    Christian: Let’s put it differently: how many Maltese have infected other Maltese?

  16. John Meilak says:

    Here are the facts.

    @Amanda Mallia

    Syphilis is not caused by sexual promiscuity alone. It is caused by the lack of use of contraceptives and this is the reason why there are quite a number of cases of this disease in Malta. I don’t know why? They cost only around 1 euro and are available at most pharmacies. Or are we still shy about these things?. However, no one has the right to stop people from having sex with foreigners. There is a concept called “free will” and I quite adhere to it.

    @Christian

    They don’t take action because the authorities know that big dogs bite.

    @Corinne Vella

    When the river is tainted, you don’t cleanse it by looking at the river delta or tributaries. You look at the river’s source.

  17. Corinne Vella says:

    John Meilak: Very poetic. Have you checked out the statistics on STDs?

    Christian: You’re basing your assessment on the total Maltese population. Do you know the rate of HIV infection among people who (shock! horror!) have sex with someone from Africa?
