The Sunday Times (London), 7 February:

TERRY’S GBP750,000 GAG

Maurice Chittenden

John Terry paid hundreds of thousands of pounds to his former mistress to guarantee her silence in his bid to remain England’s football captain.

Insiders say Terry, 29, was confident of keeping his captain’s armband after agreeing to pay Vanessa Perroncel, 33, the French underwear model, to stop her speaking out.

The exact sum is disputed: friends of Perroncel say it was GBP750,000 while friends of Terry claim the sum was GBP400,000.

The Chelsea footballer was stripped of his captaincy on Friday evening during a 12-minute meeting with Fabio Capello, the England manager.

Terry said yesterday: “I was devastated. I didn’t expect that when I walked in.”

Perhaps he expected a large glass of whisky, a cigar and a slap on the back.

    Hello Daphne,
Can you seriously see the woman having the decency to resign her post? Quite honestly, I cannot see it happening. However, thanks to your incisive (and courageous) writings, she has been exposed for what she is.

She’s certainly no credit to the judiciary, and many people are thinking that a social boycott is round the corner, although I don’t exactly see the circle she moves in giving two hoots about simple things like decency, integrity and honour.

Whilst the case might have some similarities, when you have a look at Miss Perroncel you quickly conclude that “hemm bahar jaqsam”. Just have a look at http://www.football.co.uk/gallery/vanessa_perroncel/album.shtml and you’ll understand what I mean.

[Daphne – True, she looks nothing like Robert Musumeci.]

You can’t really compare this story to Herrera’s. Terry had to drop his captaincy not because he cheated on his wife or because he slept with someone else’s girlfriend. Had that been it, nobody would have cared. He can cheat on his wife with anyone else’s gf and still keep his captaincy. The problem was she was a teammate’s girlfriend and that negatively affects the team he’s captaining; a team the whole nation has an interest in. Otherwise it’s his business who he sleeps with.

[Daphne – A team mate’s EX girlfriend, actually. And if that affects the team, then just imagine how much more adverse the effect on team spirit is of a team member who cheats on his wife with a keen insider and member of the rival team – in secret. It gives a whole new meaning to pillow talk and Trojan horses as various people have since discovered, not least Victor Scerri and Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.]

I can’t understand why you protect Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando. He is by no means an innocent victim of of Consuelo. You willingly and rightly trash Mugliett, Musumeci and Franco Debono, but stay clear of dishing the dirt on Jeffrey.

He has become a Super One regular lately, not missing an occasion to badmouth the Prime Minister. His interview on Super One was unforgivable, and comments over the reshuffle were of the same nature.

He is much more vicious and dangerous than the other traitors.
