Grace: Malta Airways was not bankrupt. It was easily the most successful company that was set up after WWII.
Mintoff deployed his usual tactics, witholding permits and licences, leaving the victim company little room to act, then going in for the kill.
Malta Airways however was financially strong enough to survive that onslaught and lives on, successfully operating – and helping development of the local economy – under a changed name.
All the projects that you blinkered MLP supporters go on and on about, Sea Malta, Mid Med Bank, Bank of Valletta, Air Malta, Xandir Malta, and whatever were ‘created’ by Mintoff by using strong arm methods to get hold of the assets of established companies that were already operating successfully in their respective fields.
Of Mintoff’s much vaunted ‘creations’: –
Sea Malta and Xandir Malta are defunct, with Sea Malta saddling the people with multi-million Euro unrecoverable debt;
Mid Med Bank is gone having left a multi-million debt contribution to the national debt in the form of guarantees for advances by said bank to Malta Drydocks;
Air Malta is still crippled by overmanning and uneconomic work practices dating back to Wistin Abela’s time;
Malta Shipbuilding was nothing but a gigantic loss maker from day one;
Bank of Valletta initially survived and prospered only by dint of assets taken over from the National Bank of Malta, with Bank of Valletta still facing a multi-million Euro claim by the NBM shareholders who were unjustly and needlessly cheated of their assets.
One great thing this website is doing is providing a widely read forum where PL supporters are finding themselves confronted by their ignorance of the truth of these matters and – one hopes – enabling said blinkered individuals to finally see the light.
