What I find most bewildering, as a budding scientist, is that in the light of his ongoing antics Pullicino Orlando has been completely let off the hook with regard to his position as Chairman of he Malta Council of Science and Technology.

He is chairman of Malta’s research funding programme and he is chairman of the par excellence EU Research Framework Programme.

Does this mean anything to anyone who is not a scientist? I have a feeling it does not.

His continued occupation of this position only underscores how undervalued science and technology are on our shores. We are made to believe that Pullicino Orlando is cut from the same cloth as the vice-chairman of MCST Nicholas Sammut. Can we be any more foolish?

Of course we can. Joseph said low added value factories are better than bioparks and technology clusters. ‘Jobs ta’ vera’ he called them.

Then there’s the war on renewable energy and efficiency, better to use coal, dismantle an existing power plant and sell CO2 to oil producers, makes a good buck. All those cottage industries doing research into energy efficiency might as well close shop.

Not to mention the denigration directed at the skills acquired using technology, new to the islands, in building the new parliament. Waste of money, according to Labour. As if collaboration between local firms and foreign players isn’t beneficial.

Finally there’s the mass confusion reigning in Labour regarding financial services, voting against, in favour and contradicting each other last week. Who cares if companies use this sector to understand the potential of a country? That what matters is the focus a country manages to transmit?

Jeffrey isn’t the problem, he’s just the consequence.

The progress of science and technology must be overseen by a respectable visionary with a proven track record, Jozef.

As the current situation stands, I don’t agree with you when you say that Pullicino Orlando isn’t the problem.

If a Labour or Nationalist government were to throw the science and technology portfolio to the dogs, then I agree that we would have more pressing issues.

      • Jozef says:

I didn’t mean there are more pressing issues, not at all, just that the MCST is one of the victims, and having him as chairman, renders it the prime object of concern by everyone. .

I was one of the first to doubt his capacity, make that vocation, for the chair in question, even because a politician will never commit himself to the thankless task it entails.

When he took up the divorce issue, it was already a warning sign that maybe, just maybe, he hadn’t understood the importance of timing, planning, vetting the proposals for a viable idea and synergy required to bag research funding. In other words, undivided attention.

What I also knew, is that his sitting pretty and using the council as an excuse for his insipid Facebook posts, could also stiffle the real potential it could have, if one considers all the above related in some way to it. Which they are, Germany’s westphalia region has managed success on an integrated model. The core idea being that venture capital goes hand in hand with quality of service and innovative processes. This would include the financing system itself.

What I didn’t know at the time, was that he would degenerate to such an extent executing Labour’s deathwish. That someday we may learn.

Excuse me! These appointments are meant to be considered ”positions of trust”. For goodness sake get rid of the scumbag.

I fully agree with you, as I myself had stated so more that a week ago on a local newspaper.

  5. Riff Raff says:

Excuse me, but who appointed Jeffrey to this position?

  6. Snoopy says:

And I can bet 1000000 euro that has been promised this position by Joseph Muscat.

  7. Joe Vassallo says:

If JPOS was thinking about the future good of the Malta Council for Science and Technology, he would be ensuring Richard Cachia Caruana’s continuous commitment in securing funds in our national interest.

This, especially in the light of the total dependency of the MCST on such programmes. I guess he cannot think so far ahead.

I bet Carmen beats him at chess.
