And the worst of it is this: 59 men are to have their human rights violated so that Joseph and his government can get a bit of relief from the pressure over John Dalli. That’s just plain evil.

I fear that this issue and its aftermath will bring a backlash in the country reminiscent of the Mintoff days 1981-87. I hope I am wrong

I’m wondering if he knows he will not manage to do it because of international laws and is just doing it to appear tough, appeal to the masses, to be seen as a tough achiever and to hide all the other problems that exist such as the Dalli case and all the others.

It might all be a plan and by this I am not saying he cares for them, just that to him every human could possibly be a pawn to play with and like in chess, thinking three steps ahead.

What a creepy feeling to separate the men from the women – isn’t this an admission that they will face trouble when they return? Otherwise why feel the need to ‘protect’ the women?

This is Nazism in its purest form. I feel shame and ashamed. I wonder if our Prime Minister will now dare parrot the words of St. Francis.

    Simply brilliant.

  7. La Redoute says:

Sign this if you haven’t already done so. The ECHR decision is temporary. Muscat has already said in parliament tonight that plans for with Libya have been finalised.

  8. jimmy says:

The Times is reporting that the ECHR has blocked the deportation of migrants from Malta to Libya. Is this true?

Can you get hold of this prohibitory injunction?

If it exists, why is the Government ‘unaware’ or ‘has not been officially informed of such a decision’ (as the Malta Independent is reporting)? What kind of game are they (Muscat and co) playing?

  9. Marlowe says:

Thank you for sharing this, it is brilliant.

  10. Liberal says:

Don’t be so sure that they’re doing it for a bit of relief from the Dalli case. I have suspected Joseph Muscat has fascist tendencies since when he became party leader. Time has proven me right.

  13. Censa says:

Daphne, I think that the whole thing is all a bluff by the prime minister. He is threatening to send these poor people back for the following reasons:

    1) to deviate from the Dalli issue;

    2) to gain points with the Maltese racists and far right movement.

The saddest part is that he is using people for his own gain. And if this is not a bluff then he is truly evil, psychotic, a bully and a coward. If I were Michelle I would kick him out.

    • Matt says:

Its all clearly a bluff, there’s no way he’d send migrants back.

I’m surprised at how many people believed that he would, he wouldn’t survive the backlash.

I imagine this was done to push for more European support regarding migration. Whether or not it works is another story.

      • Kevin says:

I disagree. It was not a bluff. Muscat did not bank on the NGOs taking action and succeeding in blocking his decision. He’ll do it differently next time. He has too much lust for dictatorial power. A right Nazi idiot

    • La Redoute says:

It is not bluff. He means what he says and intends to carry out his threats. The timing is deliberate, but that doesn’t change the nature of what he’s doing.

      • Matt says:

I’m by no means trying to defend him, but I seriously doubt he’d be stupid enough to actually carry that out. Irrespective of morality, it’s bad PR.

[Daphne – And his current actions are what exactly? Good PR?]

  14. LZ says:

I am literally shocked by this whole situation! And it’s not just about Muscat’s inhumane actions but also about the hundreds of comments I have read in the past days about how right Joseph is.

    Are these people for real?

Can’t they just get it? These migrants are people fleeing their countries in the hope of a better future. They shouldn’t be considered as a threat to our society but rather as an opportunity for us all to appreciate what a good life we have, about how great it is to open up and mix cultures.

We should help these people and not push them back to Libya!

I thought I would have never said such a thing, but seriously, I’m ashamed of sharing the same nationality, the same country, the same open space, the same rights as these bunch of racists!

    • Chris Mifsud says:

It is not about racism. It is about a huge number of illegal immigrants coming here in boatloads.

[Daphne – You’re right. It’s not about racism. It’s about human rights violations. If you are OK with that, I’m not. I wouldn’t like anyone to violate my human rights, and I am not about to advocate violating other people’s.]

Our tiny islands simply can’t handle this anymore.

[Daphne – Oh come on. What drama. Wherever I go, I don’t see black people. I see Maltese rednecks. That’s what we can’t handle anymore. But given that I don’t advocate human rights violations, I’m not about to suggest that we put all Maltese rednecks in detention camps so that the rest of us can live a civilised life.]

The EU do not care. Nine whole years of negotiations have got us absolutely nowhere.

What are we to do? Just roll back and accept the situation as it is whilst doing nothing other than plead to the EU like the the push overs we have been all these years?

LZ, if you are ashamed to share the same nationality as 90% of Maltese people you can simply go to Somalia, Eritrea or wherever else the illegal immigrants are coming from and help them from there. You will be killing two birds with one stone.

[Daphne – I have another suggestion for you, Chris. If you are so suffocated by blacks on this tiny island, why don’t you just pack up and leave with your EU passport? Because you might find more blacks, or maybe because you wouldn’t like to be treated like an outlander yourself?]

      • Chris Mifsud says:

Daphne, I am happy in Malta and its true that the situation in most of Malta is not all that bad, yet. But I am sure that everyone, even the NGO’s must agree that we cannot go on like this, accepting every boatload of illegal immigrants that comes here and in such huge numbers.

I am lucky enough not to to live in an area like Marsa, Birzebuggia, St Pauls Bay, Msida or even Balzan close to the church. Parts of these areas have turned into little Africa’s.

[Daphne – You don’t get out much, do you? St Paul’s Bay immigrants are practically all from the former eastern bloc. The African immigrants who live in Balzan are at the Good Shepherd home, which also houses a shelter set up years ago as a refuge for women and children escaping the frightening violence of Maltese men, which is why the door is lined in steel and fronted by a steel gate. Msida – you must mean near the bus-stop. Oh, my, very frightening. Black people, tsk tsk tsk, can’t have that. Marsa – that’s where they live. Birzebbugia – ditto. I don’t know about you, but I find them far more appealing and certainly safer than the Maltese in Mosta who shoot at each other or kill their wives, and those are just the ones in my neighbourhood that I’m talking about. And I haven’t even begun on the retired white-slavers, drug-dealers, attempted murderers and actual murderers in the close vicinity of where I live – all Maltese.]

If the European Union refuse to lift a finger to help us other than take a handful of immigrants over five years and offer us money (as though Malta is for rent) what are we supposed to do?

A line has to be drawn before the situation gets out of hand.

I want to make it clear that I am not racist and have absolutely no problem with anyone who comes to Malta legally, be they black, asian, middle eastern or whatever.

‘I want to make it clear, I have no intention of exterminating the Jews’ Hitler

    • Snoopy says:

      Cannot agree more!

  15. L.Gatt says:

Since John Dalli has all those millions intended for charitable projects sitting in the Bahamas, why doesn’t Muscat fly the refugees to the Bahamas instead of Libya.

This is just a case of Muscat not knowing how to solve the problem because he is simply not capable of acting maturely as a statesman should.

The simplest way to go about it is to ride roughshod on the most essential of all human rights. The right to live.

  16. B says:

Please do not take your eye off the Dalli ball.

Look at all this ‘migrant pushback’ fiasco the other way – Muscat is prepared to raise all this hell (at great political and personal cost one might add) for one reason and one reason alone – to raise enough of a smokescreen to cover the Dalli affair.

He is effecting a heavy diversionary tactic, pure and simple.

It is therefore shocking to consider the pervasive political and personal debt Muscat owes to Dalli. One may conclude that Muscat, in reality, is merely the confectioned, fabricated embodiment of Dalli.

    • Wilson says:

I believe this story has three main points to it:

A diversionary action for the Dalli affair (it is an added bonus, it was not thought out! You guys think that the PM is really bright.)

An electoral promise to do something about immigration.

An extremely good ‘exit stage left’ for point two with the electorate, someone to blame and the possibility of accessing other funding, albeit a dubious funding with lots of explaining to do.

  17. ciccio says:

Why is Joseph Muscat hiding from the John Dalli affair?

On the contrary, his advisors should tell him that this is the time to bring John Dalli forward. This is the time for Joseph Muscat and John Dalli to appear in pictures all over the media, shaking hands and smiling.

This is the time for Joseph Muscat to re-gain his popularity – which according to MaltaToday’s surveys has nose-dived – by calling on John Dalli and jointly promising help to alleviate the problems of Africa through the investment of those billions of dollars which are planned to be channelled through the Bahamas specifically for philantropic initiatives in Africa.

This strategy should held Joseph Muscat kill two birds with one stone: rehabilitate John Dalli, whilst solving the immigration problem at the point of origin.

Thank you for the link, Alan. Have been away and missed some very important posts.

While reading, the very same thought came to mind, this should be put back on the front page again with a caption of lest we forget, or something to that affect.
