Malta’s slips down to 99th place in the gender rankings under the Most Feminist Government in History

Malta has slipped down to 99th place from an already bad 84th place last year in the Global Gender Gap Report. This despite the fact that Joseph Muscat promised us his government would be “the most feminist in Maltese history”.

That shouldn’t have been very difficult, because on these two islands, attitudes towards women are a mess and are so deeply embedded in our culture that people are unthinking in their choices, words and behaviour. Take the photograph which Times of Malta has used to illustrate this story, for example (shown here).

Calves and feet: the ill-fitting trousers of a pin-striped suit and the shoes that go with them for a man (never mind what sort of man), and peep-toe red/black hooker shoes worn with black sheer tights with a seam up the back to signify the woman.

For crying out loud.

Malta slipped 23 point on political empowerment and 33 points on health and survival.

All those Assistant Commissioners in the police Corps and not a single lady. The PN had appointed the first female Superintendent, still ably serving.

[Daphne – Woman, please, not lady.]

My thoughts exactly. I have been working as a professional for the past 9 years. Never have I worn those kind of slutty shoes for work! Having said that, the trouser crease and shoes leave much to be desired!

All this in a country were women are a bit more switched on than men. They really suffer in silence.

Its a bad cop. We have two ambassadors working away in our new Mother Country and one is a woman. Not only that, she had to break through the glass ceiling without the help of her husband the Minister for Missing Deadlines, Phantom Agreements and Bad Coughs. We should be in first place, not 99th.

That’s probably a photo of the Muscats.

  7. P Shaw says:

I was under the impression that the appointment of Lara Blow-Far would push the rankings up.

  8. La Chouette says:

What a feminist government. Joseph was obviously thinking that sending his airhead wife, Mama Michelle, and his daughters, Étoile Ella and Soleil Sophie, on official visits was considered a feminist government.

Not surprising. Have you seen this, Daphne?

That tedious Paul Vincenti strikes again – and what’s worse is that our politicians continue to pander to him and his band of misogynistic and religious fanatics.

Depressingly, but unsurprisingly, most of the comments under the article are from men, and neither of them are particularly concerned about the rights of women – only the ‘unborn child’.

If they were to put another category, I mean have 3 categories instead of two, male, female and gays, I am quite sure that the gay section will quickly overtake the other two categories under this PL government.
