Who invited John Dalli to the unveiling of a monument to Censu Tabone?

Published: December 5, 2014 at 2:00am

Exactly what was John Dalli doing there, and who invited him? If I were George Pullicino, I would have stood up and moved to sit somewhere else. There are two reasons why he should have done so.

One is to drive the point home to Dalli, to those who invited him, and to others there that the presence of people like him is an insult to other guests. It is also an insult to the memory of the man being commemorated, who would have found his behaviour completely shocking and disgraceful. It is a serious insult to Eddie Fenech Adami, who is seated a couple of rows in front of him.

The other is because no halfway decent politician can afford to be photographed, whatever the context, with a crook like that.

No doubt I will be told that all Censu Tabone’s surviving cabinet colleagues were invited (I can see a couple of them in the pictures). Dalli and Tabone sat in cabinet together briefly when the Nationalist Party was first elected in 1987, but then Tabone gave up his seat in parliament to become head of state.

But guest lists are not drawn up by formula, and in this case, the appropriate thing to do would have been to knock that crooked man off the list, especially in a week when serious police officers have testified that they were all agreed he should be arraigned. And he is still under investigation by the European Commission.

Don’t you ever go to sleep?

[Daphne – Yes, and I even get a full night’s sleep because the time other people spend stuck in a perception, I spend in bed. My commute is a staircase. If you have to get up at dawn to beat the perception, then I suggest you go to bed yourself. You should have done so hours ago.]

    • M.Mifsud says:

Happily I’ve been retired for quite a few years so have the luxury of setting my own time-schedule. I’ve always been a night-owl though, even when I was working.

    • Wilfrid Buttigieg says:

Haha Daphne! You’re SIMPLY THE BEST!!!
      THE ONLY SERIOUS CHOICE!!!

  2. Tabatha White says:

There could have been a prouder moment for a monument to Censu Tabone.

    But some things won’t wait.

  3. Oh Yeah says:

    The PM invited him.

  4. P Shaw says:

A lot of people in San Giljan complained that they were not even aware of this event, let alone be invited.

I am not sure whether the PN or the government organized this.

  5. Mananni says:

The PM has that defiant lip and facial expression. Did he draw up the guest list? There aren’t many happy faces around except for the ones who are conscious of the camera.

  6. edgar says:

Irid ikollok wicc ta’ qahba to attend an occasion like this one when you are under investigation in Brussels and should be arraigned in Malta. I hope that he was snubbed by everyone, but somehow I have my doubts.

  7. rjc says:

Wasn’t he supposed to have flown to Lourdes with his brother?

[Daphne – This was the night before he left.]

  9. Malcolm says:

Lou Bondi on Facebook…”I am proud and honoured to have designed the unveiling ceremony of the monument celebrating Censu Tabone the man, the politician, the statesman. It takes place tonight at Balluta…..”. He might know who issued the invites.

    • observer says:

To my knowledge, ceremonies are ORGANIZED not DESIGNED.

One can design a kitchen, a bedroom, a shop and things like that.

Trust Bondi to boast by using silly expressions.

    • edgar says:

Lou, you might feel proud for ”designing” the ceremony to celebrate the monument for Censu Tabone, but I can assure you that if Censu was around he would not have felt proud that you sold yourself to the PL for a few euro.

  10. Brimbu says:

The decent thing would have been an excuse the he was sick (he has sufficient practice at this ), but John Dalli and “DECENT” cannot be found anywhere near each other.

  11. Marian says:

My only regret , is that I voted for him in 2008.

  12. Grezz says:

Forsi San Giljan ta’ John Dalli wkoll, peress li parti minnu “huwa” ta’ Silvio tal-imqaret.

  13. Arnold Layne says:

Whoever organised the seating arrangement got it wrong as well. Dr. Fenech Adami should never have been seated in the second row.

  14. Stamperija says:

I completed my yearly visit to this blog hoping that the quality of the content improved. I guess I remain hopefully that this might happen in the future.

Re: the story above – Someone sounds jealous for not being invited?

[Daphne – Ah, you come once a year, like Father Christmas. Well, a yearly visit won’t tell you much about the content, will it? No, I do not hanker after invitations to the unveiling of monuments in the presence of politicians. I do not need to arrive because I was born there already. I’m always astonished at how difficult some people find this to understand. People like me regard any such commitment as an unavoidable duty and obligation and not a pleasure.]

  15. Artemis says:

I don’t know how he can show his face in public. Has he no shame?

    J. Dalli B.A’s audacity has no limits.

  16. Benny Bradlee says:

Why is Censu Tabone’s nephew standing?

Veru kaz ma jafux kif imorru l-affarijiet.

[Daphne – That’s his grandson not his nephew.]

  17. Bob says:

It is a shame to see Censu Tabone’s grandson having to stand while that swindling crook sits.

  18. Felix says:

Dalli is in a form of denial about himself.

  19. Mim says:

Does the prime minister ever shave?

  20. martha says:

Maybe Dalli was invited to see what he will not be getting, that is a monument to commemorate a true gentleman who spent a lifetime being a service to others, who knew how to comport himself in every situation and did it with dignity and pride.

    • Tinu says:

Well with Labour everything is possible, If former corrupt Labour minister Lorry Sant got a monument why not under investigation Labour consultant John Dalli have one too.

  21. lee_borg says:

What’s crossing my mind is … why hasn’t the president been invited to this ceremony or even to the one for Guido de Marco…vera ried jehles minnha Joseph.

  22. chico says:

I feel the statue is out of place at Balluta.

  23. Hudu go Fik says:

    @ A. Charles

The ‘Hudu go fik’ moment at the unveiling ceremony was when Joseph Muscat realized that his chant of ‘Malta taghna lkoll’ was actually a phrase used by Censu Tabone during his acceptance speech back in 1989. Joseph Muscat’s facial expression when he listened to Censu Tabone mouthing the phrase in a recording was priceless!
