Issa Mintoff bir-ruzarju – this is getting to be like something scripted by Sacha Baron Cohen

Published: August 24, 2012 at 9:48pm

Did I see right on footage of Mintoff’s Coffin Tour 2012?

Is that a string of rosary beads in that corpse’s hands?

What is this – the new fashion accessory for crooks?

The last time I saw one of those paraded in the newspapers, Noel Arrigo was wearing it.

The only thing I can say in Mintoff’s defence is that unlike the disgraced chief justice, he would never have chosen to wear one of those.

It has been placed in his dead hands and the great pity is that he can’t see what’s been done to him.

Gaddafi was alive when he was put through his own particular hell. Mintoff is dead and hasn’t a clue that his very worst nightmare has transpired.

There he is, vulnerable in his wooden box, exposed to the prurient eyes of the people he most despised – the Maltese working-class and the sycophants who fussed around him – and unable to swear at them.

He would be wild with rage if he could see it.

You see? That’s how little insight his supporters have into his personality.

They probably think this is Mintoff’s time of glory. It would for him have been a time of great horror – all those freaks and ghouls staring into his coffin as he lies there unable to scream abuse at them.

As for his daughters, why do I get the feeling that this is some perverse form of subconscious revenge? They’ve agreed to have done to their father what he would have most hated.

Do I give a damn, though? No, I think it’s brilliant poetic justice, especially because that the queue to gawk at his corpse is going to include many of those who despised him in life and who are going there for the closure – you know, to make sure he’s really dead, even though he hasn’t got a stake through his heart.

Oh, don’t worry – I won’t be one of them. I have other fish to fry and they’re far more interesting than the dead body of a 96-year-old man.

Good one Daphne. Same thoughts here. If these people really respected him they would have not given him a Catholic burial.

Daphne, why is my comment on Mintoff’s legacy (on the meri spiteri page) still awaiting moderation? I know you are very busy with all these comments. Thanks.

That is nothing compared to the many pharisees (as he called them, I call them priests) with whom he will be surrounded tomorrow.

That is why I wrote earlier that the first people to respect him should be the ones closest to him. They knew him, knew how he lived and what he liked and disliked. Certainly he wouldn’t have wanted a day like today.

They have been disrespectful to him first and foremost for depicting him in a way that isn’t true.

No, you are not attending the funeral because your very presence would cause a riot.

[Daphne – No, I’m not going because I have no respect for the deceased or his heirs.]

I have not watched any television footage.

I have been working fourteen hour days lately.

If this story of the rosary beads is correct than somebody somewhere is really bonkers.

It is unbelievable that Mintoff did not leave specific instructions concerning his send-off.

He probably did and was ignored for political expediency.

    Typical.

I am actually beginning to pity the poor sod.

Churches, Rosary Beads, Archbishops, priests all over the place.

If he could only speak…….. Morru hu……….

    The mind boggles.

I loved watching former archbishop Mercieca blessing the corpse. After all that persecution from Mintoff, he could now go to get some closure for all that suffering that he went through.

  11. Pawlu Agius says:

This evening on SuperOne Charles Mangion described how he acted as a notary when Mintoff was claiming compensation for pain and suffering after the power station was built next to his second home in Delimara. He said it was difficult agreeing on the amount (one million euros, in the end – and he got to keep the house too) because the bastard wanted more.

They laughed, saying that this shows Mintoff was always a good negotiator.

Yes, laughing at how they managed to screw the taxpayer out of a million euros. This contrasts with the many victims of Mintoff who received nothing when he confiscated and requisitioned their private property.

I ask you to publish the last will and testament of this miser. Surely one will wonder why despite his immense capital, his daughters wanted even more and are not satisfied with the compensation given so far. They are waiting for Joseph Muscat to come to power so they can grab even more from taxpayers’ money.

It is so easy for you to try and rewrite history hidden behind your blog and failing miserably at the task.

The real truth about the conflicts which took place are known and are well documented, therefor your highly deluded comments are in a word foolish, if this drivel of puerile intellectuality is all you can come up with to get more views on your blog, it is quite frankly pitiful.

Some day I may find an intellectual post on your blog, where you discuss a matter like a proper human being and not covered in the bile of your hate to the world around you

[Daphne – ‘Intellectual’: Labour’s favourite word after ‘foxx’.]

  13. Josette Jones says:

Did you really expect any different, Daphne? Over the last few days, Mintoff’s corpse has been transformed into the ‘vara’ par excellence, paraded through the streets by a throng of fanatics, squabbled over and posed with. All that remained was to prop the sorry thing up on a chair or something.

It’s all proving to be quite hilarious to watch and we don’t even have to put up with any fireworks this time.

During the Pope’s last visit, Michelle Muscat sat with the congregation with rosary beads wrapped round her hand.

I think they were white. Something like that, making religion stylish and sticking out like a sore thumb.

As for the Labour thugs bashing up the Kurja building and all that it represented, right in front of Police GHQ, for correctness’ sake it was during Zero’s time not Mintoff’s; I think Mintoff had resigned a few months before in Dec83.

In any case, KMB was a Mintoff continuum, so it’s one and the same thing.

I don’t think that the Forum Whatever who’s sad for missing Mintoff’s reforms would give a hoot now about the Kurja, or the fact that the Maltese Courts were closed down for a whole month under Zero’s premiership. Remember that one? How’s that for democracy, dear Forum?

Any member of yours (and anyone else in PL for that matter) studying law and not knowing about that?

Read Michael Frendo’s ‘Is Malta burnning’ or the trailblazing Page 13 on The Sunday Times. Anyone living through those events would have needed the rosary beads for real.

  20. Wayne Hewitt says:

I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw that. Can anyone picture Dom Mintoff, alive, with rosary beads in his hands?
